2. Minutes from the previous meeting were approved unanimously.
3. Treasurer Report:
Toi Franks reported that there is currently a balance of $9338.00 in the State Funded Account. However, there are $244.00 pending and $1,000.00 being held in case it needs to be turned back in for the University to use if the Board of Regents issues another budget cut. Available balance is $8094.00. Foundation account statements are not coming to Staff Council.
Action - Toi Franks will contact Kim Taylor to inquire about the Foundation Account Statements.
4. Committee Reports:
Communications - The newsletter is coming closer to completion. There will be a contest to name the GCSU Staff Newsletter. The person who wins the naming contest will be given a prize. The prize has not been determined yet.
Staff Development - No new report
Events - On hold
Bylaws/Election - A list of each division and the departments within each division, was passed around for everyone to review. Staff were asked to write in any missing departments and correct the names of departments that were listed if there were errors. This will assist in finalizing a list that Staff Council delegates can follow so they know who they represent.
Action - Jen Maraziti will finalize a list of divisions and the departments within each division for Staff Council to review at the next meeting.
5. Report from Chairperson:
Joe Windish attended the State Staff Council Executive Committee Meeting, held on GCSU's campus on October 15, 2009. One of the topics of discussion was the furlough days and how they were implemented on each campus.
6. Old Buisness: None
7. New Business:
I. Holiday Family - staff discussed the pros and cons of sponsoring a family this holiday season and/or providing gifts for the Early College participants. Both ideas were unanimously declined in an effort to not overwhelm the GCSU Staff with more requests for donations. Instead Staff Council agreed to promote the following to those who want to participate and give back this holiday season:
a. donate money through the State Charitable Fund - to be launched before the Holidays
b. donate time/money to a local charity
c. sponsor a child from the GIVE Centers giving tree and provide gifts to them for Christmas
II. Staff Development Options -
a. Have a group of staff sing non-denominational carols around campus and end at "Hanging of the Greens" on Thursday, December 3.
b. Have a one-day Holiday Celebration after GCSU students leave for Holiday Break in December. The one-day celebration will include a get-together in the library atrium and possibly free entry for GCSU Staff and their families to a Basketball game.
Action - Patti Weimer will review the basketball game schedule and come up with a date. Once a date has been determined, Joe Windish will reserve the Library Atrium for part of the one-day Holiday Celebration.
III. Morale Boosting Workshops - Three options were outlined for Staff Council to discuss.
a. A motivational speaker could be sponsored by Staff Council and possibly Housing and Multicultural Affairs, to put on a half-day or one-day workshop for GCSU Staff.
b. Continuing Education could offer several different workshops that departments could plug their staff into. These workshops could range from personal development, "Saving in a Down Economy" to professional development, "Effective Time Management Skills".
c. Technology Grants could be submitted by departments so they could host their own workshops specific to their area with the money they get from the grant, if it is approved.
Staff Council members discussed all three options and decided that the Motivational Speaker may not be the most beneficial so the focus was put on option B and C.
Action - Karen Higgs is going to draft a grant proposal outline for departments to follow when requesting funds.
Action - Joe Windish will contact Continuing Education to discuss workshop options further.
IV. Wellness Incentives - Dave Terrell is working on developing a Staff Recognition Program to encourage healthy habits on campus for GCSU Staff. Because our health insurance doesn't offer incentives to staff who workout, don't smoke or drink, etc., Dave wants to encourage healthy behaviors through a recognition program. The following people volunteered to work on a committee to develop the Recognition Program further: Bevan Burgamy, Joe Windish, and Patti Weimer.
8. The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
