1. Karen Higgs called the meeting to order at 3:05 .

2. Approval of Minutes • Correction to the August minutes: The Lori referred to at the start of section 6.B. should be Strawder, not Watson. Minutes passed unanimously as amended. (Minutes posted to the web reflect the correction.)

3. Treasurer•s Report • tabled.

4. Committee Reports
A. Staff Development • The Staff Development committee is working on changes to program guidelines. Specific goals include holding recipients accountable for using funds granted, e.g. attending the event they received funding for. They are also working on an evaluation form to be completed after completion of a development opportunity. The committee plans to present recommendations to the council at the October meeting.

5. Report from the Chair

A. Budget giveback -- President Leland expressed her appreciation for the Staff Council resolution to reduce our budget by 10%. She advised that we should set the money aside so that in the event that the legislature makes the additional cutback request, we will be prepared. If such a giveback becomes necessary, we will be notified along the rest of the university divisions/units.

B. Committee Assignments • a signup sheet was passed around and everyone was asked to signup for at least one committee.

C. Give Center Requests

a. The Give Center asked that we consider sponsorship of the Chocolate Festival Breast Cancer awareness event. Given the budget circumstance, it was deemed inadvisable to initiate such funding. We can support these activities through volunteer efforts. No motion was made.

b. October 22nd has been designated Denim and Pink dress down day to help raise money for breast cancer. Members of the university community can make a donation and then wear jeans to work on the 22nd. A photo will commemorate the event. Gina Peavy and Jen Maraziti volunteered to coordinate our effort.

c. McJeans Day is a dress down day to support ill families in conjunction with Ronald McDonald House. The event is scheduled for the same day as Denim & Pink which prevents us from being able to participate.

6. State Staff Council Website • a printout of the design for the State Staff Council website was passed around. The site is expected to be completed in early October.

7. New Business

A. Mary Jane Phillips, Director of Counseling, presented on The Counseling and Assessment Team. The Team is an additional resource the university has set up in response to violent events taking place on campus nationwide. The team wants to be a vehicle for awareness on campus in order to act affirmatively to notice and tend to issues before they become problems. The team can direct concerns to the proper area so that the right people can take appropriate action or intervene as necessary to resolve problematic situations. Mary Jane asked that we help raise awareness of this new campus resource.

B. Joe Windish announced the kick-off of The Big Read on October 1st in the Magnolia Ballroom. Elaine Whittaker, Chair of the English, Speech, and Journalism Department, is heading up GCSU•s participation in the National Endowment of the Arts initiative. The Big Read is intended to restore reading to the center of American culture. Ernest Gaines• A Lesson Before Dying is the book chosen for our community. President Leland will read from the book to kick off the event. Find out about future events through the Facebook group or at http://www.neabigread.org/events.php

C. Jen Maraziti proposed holding the next meeting at The West Campus Center, the new building which will have a Grand Opening on Tuesday, October 7. All agreed it would be a good idea.

8. Motion to Adjourn at 3:40.
